3 Books ESL Students Should Read

Reading is such a key thing for any person to do and it is a wonderful way for a language student to practice their English outside of the classroom. Here is a list of three English books for ESL learners to try.

  1. Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood by Marjane Satrapi

This beautifully illustrated and written book is the story of the author’s childhood living in Tehran, Iran. The book is a graphic novel, which allows students of all different English levels to read and enjoy this book.

  1. The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros

This book is a short novel that tells the story of Esperanza Cordero who is a young teen living in Chicago, Illinois. This book may not be as easy as the first book in this list, but due to its shorter sentences and easy to understand subject matter, students that are levels 3 and up can all enjoy this novel. This novel is also taught as a part of most high school English curriculums so ESL learners that read this book will be able to share their thoughts with other Native English speakers.

  1. Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway

This novel is a very popular and well known work of English literature. The short tale tells the story of a Cuban fisherman that has an epic battle with a giant fish in the middle of the sea. The tale is told through the point of view of the fisherman so it is easy to follow and understand for levels three and up.
