Book Review

Between Ink and Shadows

Summary

Nimona Weston’s father died and left her in very hefty debt with the dark underground society of the Trust. Although she is paying it off, she sees no end in sight so she will depend on an unpredictable ally to get her out.

My Thoughts

So I honestly picked up this paperback because I am OBSESSED with this cover! I mean I could’ve borrowed it on Kindle Unlimited so my husband didn’t have to yell at me for having too many books, but that cover was worth it all. OMG SO PRETTY. And this time, the cover very much matched what was inside. This book was a fun and fantastical read that anyone who enjoyed The Shadows Between Us would enjoy.

The magic system in this series is extremely interesting and I just want to know more. We have so many interesting elements that almost seem like they are from multiple genres and I just was so in love. I also loved that the magic system was well developed and it made sense in a way where there was a yin and yang idea of balance and consequences. It was natural Earth magic and it was awesome!

There were two elements of magic, a gangster mafia-like dark magic that takes place in the underground of the book world and a lighter and more legal magic that takes place above ground. I mean both worlds of magic were interesting, but I would much rather be in the darker element of it because I am a terrible human and I always like the darker side of things. I need to know more about the Trust and how it all works because I am still a little fuzzy on how it all works out.

The book was a very quick and action packed read that really kept me on my toes and always caught me by surprise. However, I felt like there was so much going on and there were so many things that needed to be explained that the character development and even dialogue between the characters was just lost in it all. However, the introduction of the characters of the series was just enough that I ended up really liking them in the end.

The main character of the book, Nimona, was a very cool character that any girl with sass would love. Although she is badass and I love her, she could be a little too naive for my taste. This could be a little bit of a problem because she doesn’t know enough about the world she lives in and she would just go out half cocked and make mistakes wherever she goes. It could just get a little annoying at times, but in the end I loved her. There were other characters that I also enjoyed, but my ultimate favorite was Wesley. Oh Wesley was such an adorable sweet baby and I just loved LOVED him. He reminded me so much of Ansel from Serpent and Dove.

The ending was also the cherry on the very yummy and fantastical ice cream sundae and I can NOT wait for more!
