Book Review

Broken Bonds

Oleander Fallows has been on the run since her parents died, but when she is arrested, she is dragged back to her hometown and her bonded. She is not at all happy to be back and neither are her bonded……

My Thoughts

So I have been waiting for this book’s release since this amazing author announced it on her facebook live a few months ago. Just hearing her discuss the concept and the characters of this book caused me to feel so much excitement and SO MUCH IMPATIENCE. So I preordered it and counted down the days until I could start reading it. When it was sent to my kindle…. I immediately started reading and I was extremely hooked the entire read until the very end. However…. I don’t know what I’m going to do after finishing because that cliffhanger was wicked and I’m in desperate need of a cocktail after it.

So I am obsessed with this author and her AMAZING books, but I forgot how she starts a series because she is meannnnnnnnnn…. I mean not really, but let me explain. This book was the first book of the Ties that Bind series and this is her first crack at paranormal romance so she had A LOT of world building to do in this one, but I felt that she could have given her reader jusssssstttttt a little more juicy bits. So the reader had to be introduced to the book world and its characters and the magical system of the book world because it was the first of the series. I got that part, but I kinda wanted more. I still am wrapping my brain on how the bonded works and how the magical system works, but I felt like I couldn’t get attached to the characters as I usually do in this author’s books. Maybe I was just comparing and contrasting with this author’s amazing series, Hannaford Prep, and just expected her to basically write that, but as a paranormal, but it wasn’t like that at all….. I mean I liked it a LOT, but it wasn’t what I expected and I was just slightly disappointed.

Oleander Fallows is the main character and though I liked her and getting to know her, I felt like she was a little too naive to be a college student. I also expected her to be a carbon copy of Lips at first and was a little disappointed that she wasn’t. She’s a little softer than Lips and not as independent so that took me a minute to get used to. She is also harboring a major secret about why she ran away and why she won’t bond with her bonded, but the secret is alluded to, but never really revealed……even at the end so I was slightly annoyed about that too….. I JUST NEED TO KNOW!

As her bonded were very eclectic and interesting, but I didn’t feel any real connection to them all. Yes, they were hot and they sounded VERY appealing and maybe I was getting some feelings for them, but I just needed MORE to make a clear decision.

Overall, this first of the Ties that Bind series has my curiosity peaked, but in desperate need for just a little bit more. SOOOOOOOO J. Bree, please release the next one as soon as possible… thanks!
