Book Review

The Bone Shard Daughter

Summary

The emperor has ruled for many years using bone shard magic to make constructs that keep order. However, the rebellion has made life in the empire difficult and his daughter may be the only way or the empire to stay together.

My Thoughts

So I watched a TikTok video and saw that Sarah J. Maas had recommended this beauty. I had to have it immediately. I didn’t read the premise or ANYTHING, just that my girl SJM recommended and that was enough for me. I don’t know if that is bias or not, but I’m so glad I did buy it because it was AMAZEBALLS!

I picked up the book right after I purchased it for a buddy read and I am so thankful. This book had a very slow start and it took a minute for me to get into it. By a minute, I mean it took 150 pages, but I decided to push through because a buddy read. I usually will stop reading a book if I don’t like a book after 100 pages, but I needed to push through because I never wimp out on a buddy read. However, once I got over the hump, I got into it and IT WAS JUST SO GOOD!

This fantasy world is extremely intriguing and has so many amazing nuances in it that I just loved. I found this book world to be extremely unique, but very tragic and a little gory than what I usually read. I WAS VERY INTO IT! I found the magic system in this world to be very weird and out of this world. It almost reminded me of a medieval idea of magic like alchemy and I AM OBSESSED. I think the bone shard magic is SO COOL and I wait to learn more about how it works and the consequences of using it. I also really was in love with the constructs. They were such a cool element, but I had such a hard time imagining what they looked like. They sounded so cool, but I need illustrations of them because I had a hard time picturing them in my head.

Not only was the fantasy world so awesome, the characters in this world are SO PERFECT. I found them all to be so fierce and so interesting and I can’t wait to learn more about them. The book was told through multiple perspectives and it was soooooo goooooodddd! I did enjoy some perspectives more than others, but I never found myself wanting to skim anything because each perspective provided such an important side. They each provided such a great side to the book world and it was AMAZING! I did enjoy Lin and Jovi’s perspective the most, but everyone was just good good GOOD!

Overall, I really enjoyed this read and I can’t wait to follow these characters and their amazing journey.
