Windwitch Review

Summary
In the second installment of the Witchlands trilogy, Merik is seeking revenge for his destroyed ship, Aeduan is hunting Iseult, Safi and the Empress are working together to escape dastardly pirates, and everything else is a mess!
My Thoughts
So I’ve either heard nothing about this series or rave reviews on it. I honestly don’t know what to think! I really tried to like this book and read it all the way through, but it was so hard! I don’t know what it is, but I’m not connecting with any of these characters very deeply. It makes me so sad!
The idea of the novel is awesome, I love the idea of multiple magics from different elements of the earth and the fantasy-like empires we have, but I’m having a really hard time keeping two and two together when I’m reading. I just don’t have any retention of anything because there is just SO MUCH! I mean there is not even a chapter dedicated to each character, it will just switch perspectives mid chapter and I’m always finding myself looking backwards each time to see where the first perspective ended and the other one started. I just can’t keep up!
I also feel like there are just too many characters. I mean I know it has been done before and could be great, but usually those books are twice as long. The book bounces between characters so often that I don’t find myself connected with them and I’m even forgetting who is who most of the time. I mean I remember the characters from the first book and that was easy enough to follow, but all of their parts were so short! I just don’t get enough time with the characters and I am feeling the FOMO! I need time with each character, I need to be wined and dined by them so I know who I like and who I don’t. This book was maddening to me.
I mean I kind of like Safi, she is a badass, but I want to spend more time with her! I want her to have an affair with a pirate because Merik is sort of boring and whiny. I also liked Viva, more than I thought I would, but again, I need more wooing to be truly convinced. I just feel the writing just glazes over everything and I find myself skimming to get at least some type of action.
I mean I know I am going to keep reading the series because I’m definitely an Alice wandering through Wonderland and I need to know what happens. However, this book was not my favorite, but I see potential for the continuing series.
