25 years ago, Charlie Crabtree used his dark imagination to convince his friends to do horrible deeds and then disappeared. A new case causes Charlie’s name to appear once again and the past to come to a whole new life.
I have had this audiobook in my Audible shelf for like a year so when spooky season came around, I just had to read it. Boy am I happy I did because it was creepy and spooky and terrifying in the best way. It was what my spooky heart was yearning for this season.
I read The Whisper Man last year and fell instantly in love with this setting and all its creep factor so to be back again was awesome. However, this story was with a completely different set of characters and facing a completely different situation. It was familiar yet fresh at the same time and I was SOOOOO HERE FOR IT!
Just the setting alone creeped me the HELL out and when the story of these twisted and deeply disturbed characters was revealed, it creeped the HELLLLLLLLLLL OUT!
The story is told through dual perspectives of Paul Adams and a detective on the current case, Amanda. Paul’s perspective also bounces from present to past in a way that is confusing, but serves to the plot. The confusion adds a wonderful mystery that all thrillers should have.
The plot has so many thrills, kills, horror and layers and the author slowly unravels it in a way that keeps you on the edge of your seat the ENTIRE TIME! There were also SO MANY AHA moments and twists and turns and omg I couldn’t believe how good it turned out to be. I was so in love and this book got me in a way that his first book didn’t…. It had creepy children in it.
So children that are in a scary movie are always questionable to me and these children are sooooooooo creepy and their story was even worse than I was expecting. This author created a creepy dream world that scared the crud out of me, but also layered it with some traumatic and heartbreaking reality that shook me even worse than the creep factor. So many secrets were revealed and it all made my head spin and it was anything but predictable.
THISSSS THRILLER WAS KILLER Y’ALL!
Overall, this author made such a unique and haunting story that I will remember forever!
