Trick or Treat Reads

Halloween is soon upon us and I cannot be more excited! Halloween is my favorite holiday for many reasons, but the main reason I love Halloween is the fact that I get to be whoever I want to be which is a lot like reading a book. While I was thinking of blog posts, I really want to do something with the phrase, “trick or treat,” and I thought about how this could relate to books. Some books that I thought were going to be a trick turned into being a treat to read. Other books can start out as a treat, but turn into a trick. These are some of the books that fit these descriptions.

Books that were a Treat

These are some of the books that I was hesitant to read because I thought I wasn’t going to like them. However, once I started reading I was hooked. This list contains some of the books that really shocked me because of how much I enjoyed them.

After by Anna Todd

I’ve mentioned how much I really enjoyed this book, but when I read the description for the first time, I really wasn’t sure that I was going to like it. My book club members were just obsessed with this book and I didn’t understand why. So I went into reading it very unsure about how I was going to feel. I purchased the audiobook first and the narrator’s voice just grated on my ears. I decided to buy the paperback and try again and by the third chapter, I purchased the entire series. I was obsessed with it and still am to this day.

Caraval by Stephanie Garbar

When I started my bookstagram account, most of the big accounts I followed raved about this book in a lot of their posts. The idea sounded really intriguing to me and I really wanted to read it, but I was really worried it wouldn’t reach my expectations. This happens sometimes and I didn’t want to waste my money on the complete series if I wasn’t going to like the first book. I decided to buy the first book and see what happened, but I wasn’t expecting much. I had the book for a couple months and then I decided to read it when one of my favorite bookstagrammers convinced me to. Thank god I did. I loved it so much from the first chapter and bought the entire series as soon as I finished.

Baby Teeth by Zoje Stage

Oh this book! I was shocked by how amazing this book was and I will continue to think about this book for the rest of my life. Goodreads actually recommended this book to me in an email one day and I found it on Amazon for under 10 dollars. When I started it, I thought it was going to be something completely different and it definitely turned into a treat!

The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller

I saw this book on bookstagram and was captivated by the cover. However, I found out that it was a standalone and it was kind of short so I was a little wary of it. I waited a while to read it after I got it, but I was so hooked by the first page. Alessandra is a badass!!! I really enjoyed reading her story and the love interest is so mysterious and delicious. If you loved Throne of Glass or anything by Sarah J. Maas, you should read this book!!

Books that were a Trick

Books that are a trick are books that I felt were something I wasn’t expecting and didn’t want. They also are books that I was really looking forward to and they ended up being a little disappointing. These are some of the books that were a trick to me.

Scythe by Neal Shusterman

This is a really unpopular opinion, but I really did not like this book! I feel embarrassed to say it, but I just did not find it as amazing as everyone has claimed. The concept sounded so amazing and I really enjoyed the book world, but the characters fell flat for me and the romance didn’t make any sense. This book is extremely well liked and posted on bookstagram and maybe it got me too excited for it. I bought the sequel and I may get to it eventually, but it won’t be any time soon.

Restore Me by Tahereh Mafi

It kills me to say this because I am obsessed with the Shatter Me series, but this book was an extreme disappointment for me. I thought that the series had been completed and when Barnes and Noble notified me that a new book was coming out I was shocked! There was such a huge time gap between the third and fourth book that I should’ve been a little more wary. I just thought the characters were at a different place and the author just ripped out the rug from under me and ripped out my heart. I still loved the book, but it was a trick on me.

Darling Rose Gold by Stephanie Wrobel

I was so excited about this book and it really let me down. Unfortunately, the real news story was so much better than this book and I really hated the main character. I thought she was going to be a lot different and the mother was just plain awful. I also thought the story dragged a lot longer than it should have. It was just so disappointing!

A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J. Maas

If you have read any of my blogs at all, you know that I am a huge SJM fan and it kills me to include this book in this list. I loved the ACOTAR series so much and I was in desperate need of more time with the characters so when she released this novella, I was so excited. However, the one character that had come so far, just crashed and burned. IT JUST KILLED ME! It was such a trick!

Books can be a trick or a treat sometimes and obviously these stem from our own opinions and some people probably don’t agree. I would love to hear your picks for books that were a treat and books that were a trick. Please let me know in the comment box below!
