Book Review

Under the Whispering Door

In a tea shop that looks like it will collapse, lives a reaper, an old man, a ghost dog, and a ferryman.

They all work together to help the dead crossover, for however long that takes.

My Thoughts

I have been hesitant to pick up this book for TWO reasons…

  1. I didn’t like this author’s first series, Green Creek… like AT ALL. The writing drove me absolutely insane and I DNF it, even though I own all of them.
  2. This book is sooooo majorly hyped and EVERY single person I love on any social media platform loves it…. They also loved the Green Creek series too so I was very scared about what I was getting into…

However…. One of my besties, whose opinion I hold in very high regard, said she loved it. So there you go, I bought it and I read it….

At first, I didn’t know what to think. I was getting major Scrooge from Wallace Price and I didn’t know how I felt about it…. It’s not Christmas so I wasn’t in the Christmas Carol mood, but as I continued to read, it became such a wonderfully beautiful story about love, grief, death, and life.

I became so enamored by these characters and their wonderfully quirky story. About halfway through, I was freaking obsessed with these characters

I LOVED the idea that people passed through a tea shop. Tea is such a universally calming beverage that it added so much hope and love to the plot and at times made me laugh. I would loveeeee for this to be how we pass on to the other side. I am so curious to see what tea Hugo would choose for me.

ALSO… the fantastical spin of death and ghosts is so unique and VERY well done.

When Wallace drank his peppermint tea, it reminded me of when Anton Ego ate the ratatouille in the Disney film, Ratatouille. It just warmed my heart in all the ways. There were so many beautiful and heartfelt and sob-worthy parts in this book….

I cried so much that’s almost embarrassing. So be prepared to grab all the Kleenex. However, this book isn’t necessarily sad, it is just so heartwarming and beautiful that you can’t help, but cry happy tears of joy. These characters are just so loveable and they all tell such a unique and beautiful story about life. I honestly can’t say who was my favorite character because I loved them all so much.

This book was freaking perfection and this author has been added to my auto buy list!
